In the last quarter of 2023, YouTube took a massive clean-up drive in India, pulling down over 2.25 million videos that didn’t align with its Community Guidelines.
What to know: This action was part of a larger global effort, with the platform eliminating over nine million videos worldwide for similar reasons. YouTube’s steadfast rules aim to shield its vast community from harmful content, ensuring a safe space for all its users.
Impressively, machines flagged over 96% of these videos globally during this period, and YouTube took down more than half of them before they even received a single view.

The platform said that it applies its guidelines universally, making no exceptions based on who uploads the content or its geographical origin. This stringent policy is upheld through a blend of advanced machine-learning technology and diligent human reviewers, ensuring that inappropriate content is swiftly identified and removed, the tech giant added.
The crackdown extended beyond videos, with YouTube terminating over 20 million channels globally, primarily for spam and scams. Additionally, it eradicated more than 1.1 billion comments, with the vast majority identified as spam.
