In a heartwarming moment at the Supreme Court of India, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and his colleagues paused from their legal duties to acknowledge the accomplishment of the daughter of one of the Court’s cooks.

What Happened: The woman, Pragya, had recently secured a prestigious scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in law at two esteemed universities in the United States.

In a touching display of recognition, captured in a video by the Press Trust of India, the Chief Justice and his fellow judges extended their congratulations to Pragya. Amid the applause, they also took a moment to honour her parents, including her father, Ajay Kumar Samal, who diligently serves as a cook at the Court. The Chief Justice, acknowledging Samal’s contribution, remarked, “It is a matter of pride for all of us.”

As a token of their appreciation, the Chief Justice presented Pragya with a book adorned with signatures from all the Supreme Court judges. Grateful for the gesture, Pragya expressed her profound appreciation, considering it a privilege and a momentous honour.

Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, the Chief Justice emphasised the importance of ensuring that deserving and hardworking students like Pragya have access to the resources they need to pursue their aspirations.

He underscored that this responsibility lies not only with the government but also with every citizen, highlighting the collective effort required to nurture and support the dreams of the next generation.
