Billionaire techie Vinod Khosla delivered a blunt message to fellow magnate Elon Musk in a recent candid interview: one cannot simply sue their way to achieving artificial general intelligence.

What Happened: Speaking to Bloomberg TV, this remark comes against the backdrop of Musk’s legal battle with OpenAI, the AI research organisation he co-founded, which he accuses of deviating from its original mission under the influence of its biggest investor, Microsoft.

Khosla, an early investor in OpenAI and a notable figure in the tech industry downplayed concerns about Microsoft’s involvement and emphasised the importance of rapid AI development in the US due to the field’s competitive nature. Musk, on the other hand, has advocated for slowing down AI development citing potential risks, despite having started a rival AI company.

Further intensifying the debate, Khosla critiqued Musk’s lawsuit as stemming from “sour grapes,” pointing to a possible change of heart and missed opportunities by Musk. He likened the control needed over AI development to that of nuclear technology, suggesting a careful and secure approach to its advancement.

OpenAI, defending against Musk’s lawsuit, argues that Musk had initially supported its pivot towards profitability to ensure its competitive edge in the tech landscape.
