In a first for Indian education, a school in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has introduced IRIS, the country’s first AI teacher.

What Is It All About: Developed by Maker Labs, this robot, powered by generative AI, Iris represents a significant step forward in education, pushing the boundaries of this next generation tech in a classroom environment, according to a post on Instagram by the developers.

“With IRIS, we’re embarking on a journey to transform education using the capabilities of AI to tailor learning experiences uniquely for each student,” Maker Labs said in the post. “By adapting to individual needs and preferences, IRIS enables educators to deliver engaging and impactful lessons like never before.”

The unveiling of Iris took place at KTCT Higher Secondary School in Kerala, with Dr. K Rajeev, director of the space physics laboratory (SPL) of VSSC, inaugurating the AI teacher. The robot has also quickly found acceptance and fondness from the students.

IRIS is said to be able to move, interact and answer students’ queries effectively. Impressively, classes taught by Iris have seen perfect attendance, reflecting the students’ enthusiasm for this innovative approach to education.

IRIS is equipped to teach a wide range of subjects, from nursery to Class 12, and currently communicates in three languages: English, Hindi and Malayalam, with plans to expand to over 20 languages. Additionally, the makers of IRIS claim it has built-in safeguards to block inappropriate content, ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.
