Bill Gates Explores India's Digital Infrastructure In Odisha, Champions Use Of AI In Agriculture

Bill Gates, the visionary co-founder of Microsoft and a leading philanthropist, made a noteworthy visit to Maa Mangla Basti in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, continuing his commitment to innovative global welfare. Arriving on Tuesday night, Gates’s itinerary on Wednesday includes engaging programs aimed at harnessing artificial intelligence for enhancing agricultural practices.

What Happened? Gates is set to meet with Odisha’s Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, focusing on initiatives such as the ‘Jaga Mission’ for slum development, the ‘Mukta’ scheme for generating local employment, and ‘Mission Shakti’ aimed at empowering women.

Since 2017, the state’s agriculture and fisheries departments have partnered with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to pioneer data-driven solutions for farmers and fishermen.

Gates’s blog, ‘Gate Notes,’ recently highlighted his anticipation for visiting Odisha to observe a government program that equips women with the skills necessary for securing government construction contracts, significantly benefiting over 22,000 women’s groups since 2018.

Praises for India: Admiring India’s knack for innovation, Gates is excited to witness the country’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in action, particularly its application in agriculture. He emphasized the role of Aadhaar in maintaining a comprehensive registry of 7.5 million farmers, facilitating personalized farming advice through AI and chatbots.

Gates lauds India’s enduring legacy of innovation, from the ancient introduction of the decimal system to recent advancements that have a global impact. During his visit, Gates will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s ongoing collaboration with India, aiming to further leverage Indian innovations for worldwide benefit.
