Low-cost carrier SpiceJet has committed to providing a full refund to a passenger who was trapped in the bathroom while aboard a Bengaluru-bound flight.

What Happened: The passenger found himself trapped inside the aircraft’s bathroom for around an hour due to a malfunctioning door, news agency PTI reported. SpiceJet said its crew extended assistance and guidance throughout the journey. Upon reaching Bengaluru airport, an engineer successfully opened the lavatory door, and the passenger received prompt medical attention.

The incident occurred on SpiceJet flight SG-268, en route from Mumbai to Bengaluru on January 16, Tuesday. The airline acknowledged the malfunction, stating that the crew made dedicated efforts to support the stranded passenger.

The passenger stuck in the lavatory would be provided with a complete refund, ensuring that the inconvenience faced during the journey was addressed, the airline operator assured.

A handwritten note allegedly passed by the cabin crew to the stranded passenger circulated on social media. The note reassured the passenger and let him know that attempts were made to open the door, and despite the challenges, the aircraft was approaching landing. The passenger was advised to secure himself and remain calm until the main door opened for assistance.

Deeper Issues: Flight-related issues and refund concerns dominated the passenger complaints reported to scheduled domestic airlines in December 2023, as per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) report. Out of a total of 712 passenger-related complaints received during the month, around 99% had been addressed by the airlines.

The report highlighted that the major reasons for complaints included problems during flights and issues related to refunds. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for December 2023 was around 0.52.
