Topping the list of gainers was Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), with a significant increase of 5.24% in its stock price.

Wipro Limited followed closely, reporting a 4.2% surge in its stock price, reaching ₹485.0 from the previous close of ₹465.45. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) also saw a positive movement, with its shares trading at ₹472.85, marking a 3.19% increase. Titan Company and HDFC Bank were among other leading gainers, with increases of 2.53% and 2.31% respectively.

Conversely, HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited led the list of underperformers on the NIFTY 50 index, with its shares experiencing a 4.13% drop.

Bajaj Finance Limited also experienced a decline, with its stock price falling by 2.67% to ₹7456.65. Other stocks that underperformed include Eicher Motors, SBI Life Insurance, and Divi’s Laboratories, with decreases of 2.03%, 1.85%, and 1.79% respectively.

On January 16, benchmark indices witnessed a break in their five-day gaining streak and concluded the trading session lower amid heightened volatility. The Sensex closed down by 199.17 points or 0.27% at 73,128.77, while the Nifty ended 65.20 points or 0.30% lower at 22,032.30.

Metal and oil & gas indices recorded gains of nearly 1% each, while power, realty, healthcare, and Information Technology sectors witnessed declines ranging from 0.5 to 1.5%.
