As 2023 draws to a close, the Nifty 50 index is set to extend a historic record that no other market in the world has come close to.
What Happened: The Nifty 50 index is set to deliver gains in eight consecutive calendar years—a record that no other global index can boast. So far this year, the index has gained nearly 18%, with three sessions to go.
The Dow Jones Index and Nikkei 225 have had the next best number of consecutive yearly gains, posting gains in six straight years.

In fact, the Nifty 50 has only delivered negative returns in five calendar years since the year 2000. Its worst performance came in 2008 amid the great financial crisis, where it posted a loss of 51.8%.
Cumulatively, the index has delivered total percentage returns of 169.2% since 2015, which was the last time the index closed in negative territory in a calendar year.
