IT Minister Says Only 'Trusted' AI Models Will Have Access To India's Data

Union Technology Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said India was taking measures to exclusively allow only trusted artificial intelligence (AI) models to access its datasets. The move would aim to counter the misuse of data witnessed globally and underscores the importance of building AI models on secure datasets.

What Happened: Chandrasekhar, the minister of state for electronics and information technology, emphasised the necessity of a global conversation to establish foundational principles or guardrails governing AI models, according to media reports. He urged the GPAI, a consortium of 28 nations, to reach a consensus on these guidelines within the next six to nine months.

The minister stressed that the process should be inclusive, involving all nations and expressed a desire to see the conclusion of this initiative at the Korea Safety Summit, where 28 countries can collectively agree on basic regulations for AI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the GPAI Summit on December 12, underscoring the need for countries to collaborate on creating a global framework that ensures responsible AI development and usage. As part of the GPAI event, India, currently holding the council chair, is actively working on a multi-country, consensus-based declaration on AI. The declaration aims to address risks associated with AI and promote innovation in the field.

The GPAI Summit marks the first major event under India’s leadership as the council chair. India assumed this role in November, taking over from France. It also follows a landmark European Union agreement to govern the use of AI, including governments' use of AI in biometric surveillance and how to regulate AI software like ChatGPT.

In his address at the summit, the prime minister highlighted the potential dangers of AI, warning that if AI tools fall into the wrong hands, such as terrorists or cyber attackers, they could wreak havoc. Modi urged nations to collaborate on a global level to devise a framework that ensures the responsible and secure development of AI technologies.
