Manish Malhotra To Revamp Air India's Crew Dresses As Airline Looks To Ditch Sarees

Air India, the only airline to have its female crew wear sarees, is expected to move towards a more contemporary look by the end of 2023.

According to a report by the Hindustan Times, the new uniforms are expected by November and may not include the traditional saree. Designer Manish Malhotra is reportedly overseeing the makeover.

Officials have hinted that the new attire will continue to have traditional elements. Options for women could include churidars, while male crew members are set to wear suits.

This impending change has been met with a mixture of sentiments. Some fans of the saree, a garment that has seen a significant revival in recent years, may be disappointed by this shift.

The new uniforms will reflect the colours of Air India’s new livery: deep red, aubergine, and gold. The first official sighting of the attire is likely to be on the A350 aircraft, due for delivery next month.

Air India’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, highlighted the new livery during a recent rebranding event but declined to comment on the uniform changes.
