In a significant stride for India’s tech industry, ITI Limited, a Central PSU under the Ministry of Communication, has launched its proprietary laptop and micro PC named ‘SMAASH’. Competing fiercely with established MNC brands like Acer and Dell, ITI Limited’s innovative offerings have secured several tenders.
What Happened? Developed in partnership with Intel Corporation, SMAASH Micro PCs are claimed to be designed to minimise carbon footprints, reduce e-waste, and consume less power than traditional PCs. Furthermore, its compact size and extended lifespan make it a cost-effective and space-saving solution.
ITI Limited claims to have deployed over twelve thousand SMAASH PCs at various customer sites. These education-focused PCs are solar-compatible, accepting direct current (DC) input.

Keeping up with these PCs being focused towards the education sector, the company has already landed two tenders from KITE – Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education and has supplied around 9,000 laptops designed specifically for students to government schools in Kerala.
Key background: India has banned laptop imports, and initially, the plan was to enforce this immediately. However, recognizing the potential price surge in laptops from companies like Apple, Dell, Samsung, Asus, Lenovo, and others, the Indian government pushed the compliance date to October 31. Meanwhile, the government has encouraged laptop companies to consider manufacturing laptops in India using a Production Linked Incentive (PLI).
Price Action: ITI Ltd. shares surged following the announcement, up 17.36% to ₹146.30 on Monday afternoon.
