Apple could be gearing up to unveil the upcoming iPhone 15, manufactured in Foxconn‘s Chennai unit, in mid-September, aiming for a near-simultaneous launch with its global release.

What Happened? Apple has set the iPhone 15’s global release for September 12, and insiders suggest the company wants to cater to the Indian market first, especially with the festive season approaching.

Sources speaking to the Economic Times also claim that by December, Apple plans to expand iPhone 15 exports, targeting regions like Europe and the US.

Why it matters? This move marks a significant reduction in the time gap observed last year when the iPhone 14, produced in the same Chennai factory, reached Indian markets about a month post its global debut.

India’s role in Apple’s production strategy has seen a remarkable surge, accounting for 7% of its global production, a jump from less than 1% before the 2021 production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.

Apple’s commitment to India’s export ecosystem is evident, with iPhone exports in the June quarter of FY24 reaching ₹20,000 crore. This growth trajectory suggests that by ramping up production, nearly 80% of Apple’s phones might soon be exported from India.

The PLI scheme, introduced during heightened US-China tensions, attracted major Apple contract manufacturers, further solidifying India’s position as a key player in Apple’s global supply chain.
