Google is expanding its innovative AI-driven search feature, the Search Generative Experience (SGE), to India and Japan, marking its first introduction outside the U.S.

What’s it about? Google originally showcased SGE at the I/O Developer conference, which transforms traditional search into a more conversational interaction. Users can now pose questions to Google and receive AI-crafted responses, much like chatting with an AI bot.

In catering to local preferences, the feature will support Japanese, English, and Hindi in the respective countries. Recognising the popularity of voice commands in India, Google has also incorporated voice input, allowing users to voice their queries and listen to the AI’s answers.

A notable enhancement to SGE is the direct link to sources. Users can now access the original web pages that the AI uses for its answers. By clicking an arrow icon next to the AI’s response, they’re directed to the source, offering a deeper dive into their queries.

Keyword-based searches dying a slow death? Interestingly, Google’s data indicates that the younger demographic, particularly those aged 18-24, are gravitating towards this conversational approach. They’re not just asking questions; they’re engaging in longer, full-sentence interactions, a shift from the conventional keyword-based searches.

The company is also experimenting with integrating ads within the AI chat responses, aiming to monetize this new digital interaction space. For those keen to try out SGE, it’s accessible via the Search Labs section on the Google app and Chrome desktop.
