WhatsApp now offers a new feature to automatically mute calls from unknown numbers, responding to an increase in spam calls that troubled its large user base in India. Mark Zuckerberg, the Meta CEO, unveiled this call-muting feature and a new privacy checkup option on Tuesday.
In Zuckerberg’s words, this change allows users “even more privacy and control.” While WhatsApp will automatically mute these calls, they will still appear in notifications and the app’s call list. This ensures users can still check later if a silenced call was from a known contact whose number they hadn’t saved.
When receiving a call from an unidentified number, the user’s phone will display the number alongside a “silenced unknown number” message.

How To Silence Unknown Callers On Whatsapp:
- Step 1: Open the WhatsApp app.
- Step 2: Go to “Settings.”
- Step 3: Navigate to the “Privacy” section.
- Step 4: Click on “Calls.”
- Step 5: Select the “Silence unknown caller” option.
WhatsApp also added a new privacy checkup feature under the Privacy section. The checkup walks users through several privacy controls like deciding who can contact them, controlling personal info, adding more privacy to chats, and increasing account protection.
With this feature, users can modify settings like two-factor authentication, decide who can add them to groups, set a timer for disappearing messages, and control who sees their profile picture.
