WhatsApp’s team announced in a blog post on Tuesday that they will now allow users to link multiple phones to their WhatsApp account.

What Happened? According to WhatsApp, the company is adding the feature that has been the most requested update for years through an app update that simplifies the linking process. The company is rolling out the update globally, and it is expected to be available on all devices in the coming weeks.

The linked phones will connect to WhatsApp independently, meaning that each device will have end-to-end encryption for all messages, media, and calls. The app will automatically log users out of all companion devices if the primary device is inactive for a long period, WhatsApp said in its blog post.

Previously, users had to scan a QR code to link their accounts on multiple devices — although not other phones. Now, users can enter their phone number on WhatsApp Web to receive a one-time code, which they’ll then use to enable device linking. This new method is “more accessible” and simplifies the account linking process, according to WhatsApp.

Small businesses can benefit greatly from this update, as employees can use their respective devices to communicate with customers under the same WhatsApp Business account, WhatsApp concedes.

This new feature follows the implementation of multi-device features last year, which allowed people to connect up to four additional non-phone devices to one WhatsApp account for seamless communication.
