Late billionaire Ratan Tata was surprised at SpaceX’s ability to make its own rocket engines when he once visited Elon Musk‘s space facility.

In an old interview, the former Tata Sons’ chairman shared his thoughts about Musk. “Elon has been a tremendous innovator but he’s been a personal innovator,” Tata remarked.

Sharing an anecdote from the time he visited a SpaceX facility to attend a meeting, Tata said he initially could not believe that the company made its own rocket engines and was preparing to send an unmanned vehicle to the space station.

What intrigued him further was that Musk was doing it at twice the speed of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and at about one-tenth the cost. But as they continued the tour through the facility, Tata came to believe that SpaceX was indeed building its own rocket engines and vehicles.

Tata praised Musk’s journey from creating electric cars to exploring space and for fostering an environment that makes such growth possible.

In a separate conversation with students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in 2014, Tata praised Musk for his work at Tesla. He said that there are a host of things that Musk could’ve chosen to avoid while building an electric vehicle, but he still went into the details to enhance customers’ overall experience.

“Going beyond the product to the overall experience is an important ingredient,” Tata remarked.

But it’s not just Tata who appreciates Musk; the feeling has been mutual. In an old interview, Tesla CEO Musk praised Tata’s decision to build the Nano, which aimed to make four-wheelers affordable for the middle class. However, he went on to discuss the impracticality of gasoline cars in the future, saying that the cost of operating a car would far exceed the cost of buying one.
